Handmade save the date card ideas: 5 of my favourites

Your handmade save the date card will be the very first glimpse that your guests will have of your wedding day to come. A precursor to your bespoke handmade wedding invitations, they will set the tone for a beautiful and elegant wedding. Save the date cards are not an essential part of your wedding stationery suite but they can be very useful. If you are marrying during the busy summer months, or if your big day falls during public holidays such as Christmas or Easter they can be a great way to give your guests that little bit of extra notice, and get a note in the diary. Here are my top 5 ideas for bespoke and handmade save the date cards.

Save the date card calendars

A perfectly printed calendar for the month of your wedding with the big day highlighted makes for a fabulous handmade save the date card. Elegant layers of card in your wedding colours, perhaps with a hint of glitter or sparkle, work well for a classic look. Add ribbons, crystals and embellishments for something a bit more ‘extra’. Mark the big day with a printed heart, diamante or peal embellishment.

Pencil us in save the date cards

If you love a play on words and you’re after a slightly more quirky handmade save the date card then this one’s for you. A sweet little pencil attached to a card with your wedding details. Choose pure silk ribbon for a luxe, elegant feel or brown hessian twine if you’re planning a rustic wedding.

Bookmark save the date cards

My personal favourite handmade save the date card is the bookmark style. I first made them for my brother’s wedding in 2007! Back in those olden days(!?) people still carried paper diaries, so a save the date to mark the page seemed appropriate. Since then I’ve made hundreds (maybe thousands!) of them, each with their own unique look and style. They are super simple but also elegant and can be personalised with a huge range of ribbon and card colours.

Luggage tag style save the date cards

These little tags are the perfect choice for a destination wedding or for a travel themed big day. They can be personalised with passport stamp images to really embrace the travel theme. I love to finish them off with an airmail style striped cotton ribbon. The luggage tag style is so adaptable and can be carried through the rest of your wedding stationery, perfect for place cards and table plans too!

A handmade save the date card to hang up

A super sweet, save the date card that your guests can dangle from a door handle. I love to make them in a heart shape for all the romantic wedding feels. These are a great idea to send out around Christmas time when your nearest and dearest can hang them in the tree, cute!

So that’s it, my top 5 handmade save the date card ideas. If you’re planning on having save the date cards for your wedding, remember that you can send them up to two years in advance. The norm is around 18 months before, following up with invitations 4 to 6 months ahead of the big day. If you need any advice on which save the dates would be best for you and your wedding, get in touch I’d love to help!
